When is it too cold to paint?

We often get people calling us in late September or early October, having put off painting their houses all summer.  They want to know if they can still get it done before the winter.  The truth is, it depends on the weather.  Most paints can be applied between 10 and 15 degrees celsius (49-59 fahrenheit) and some as low as 5 degrees celsius(40 fahrenheit).  The key is will they dry?  On a nice sunny or windy day, latex paints can dry in 1/2 an hour, but if its getting colder or the painted area is in the shade, it may take hours to dry.  Once, one autumn day, we painted a metal lamp post around 4pm.  When we came back in the morning it was as if we had just painted it!  As the days get shorter  paint has less time to dry and eventually cure (curing takes 2-3 weeks) so most paint companies reccomend an overnight temperature of between 10 and 15 degrees.  You can get away with painting in colder temperatures, but you are taking the risk your paint will fail prematurely.  Our general rule is ” if you have to wear a coat to paint its probably too cold.”  We tell customers to book early for the following spring.
